Spring Cleaning For a Healthy Home

Spring has sprung and that means it's time to clean your home from top to bottom! Not only can a good spring cleaning help you get rid of all the dirt and dust that has built up over the winter, but it can also help create a healthier environment for you and your family and reduce stress. Here are five tips to help you get a head start on a happier home.

1. Dust Everything

When was the last time you went through your home and dusted all the surfaces, from your shelves and nicknacks to your window, blinds, and baseboards? If you don't remember, it's time. Dusting helps get rid of any allergens lurking in the shadows such as dust and debris which often cause sneezing and congestion for allergy sufferers. Pay close attention to areas where dirt and dust accumulate the most, such as light fixtures and fans.

2. Clean Out the Cabinets

Go through your food cabinets and get rid of anything that's expired or that you don't plan on using. Expired food can accumulate mold, bugs, and other bacterias, so a regular cadence of proper pantry clean outs is essential. If you come across in-date items that you know you won't use soon, consider donating them to a local food pantry. This will not only declutter your cabinets, but the donation can also help others in need.

Don't skip your cleaning supplies storage. Seal all chemicals properly, ensuring there is no leakage. Check that there are no toxic fumes, and store them in a safe place where children and pets can't reach them.

Lastly, be sure go clean out your medicine cabinets, properly dispose of any expired medication. If you find medications that are still in date but that you no longer need, consider donating them to a charitable pharmacy or other organization. This is also an excellent time to take an inventory of OTC products. Replenish your first-aid kit and stock up on the essentials like pain relievers, antihistamines, and digestive health products. These are all products you'll want to have on hand when symptoms inevitably occur.

3. Clean the Windows

Window cleaning is one of those tasks that always seem to get put off until later, but spring is the perfect time to give them a good scrubbing. Studies show that exposure to natural light when spending time indoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and improve symptoms of depression. It's also a great way to shed some light on your freshly clean home!

4. Check Your Home's Cords and Outlets

This is also a good time to check your home's cords and outlets. Ensure all the cables are in good condition, with no breaks or fraying, and that all the outlets are functioning correctly. If you find any problems, it's best to address them immediately as they can pose a significant danger, especially to children. Replace damaged cords, toss electronics with frayed wires, and contact an electrician if an outlet's not working.

5. Clean the Floors

One of the most important parts of spring cleaning is giving your floors a good scrubbing. Shoes can track unwanted dirt, germs, and bacteria into the living space. So, pay special attention to high-traffic areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom, and use the appropriate cleaning supplies for each flooring type.

Spring is a time for fresh starts, clearing your mind and your home. It is a great time to declutter while also ensuring that you're keeping your home and happy, healthy place for you and your family.
